Top seeded Rice Lake ended the Ellsworth softball season Tuesday, May 28, handing the Panthers a 6-3 loss in the opening round of WIAA Sectional play. Ellsworth came into the game in Rice Lake as the number two seed in the sectional.
Ellsworth finished the season with a 21-7 overall record and won the Middle Border Conference with an 11-3 mark. Rice Lake went on to lose to Mosinee, 1-0, in the sectional title game on Thursday.
Ellsworth came into the game riding high on a nine-game winning streak, including five straight on the road.
Offensive stars for the Panthers on the day were Aaliyah Huppert, who went 1-3 at the plate with a home run and two runs batted in. Aubrey Wittenburg also went 1-3 with a triple and a run scored.
Junior pitcher Aliza Acker struck out eight Rice Lake batters.
Ellsworth started the game strong, picking up two runs in the first inning. However, the Warriors evened the score in their half of the Stanza and then picked up one run in the third inning, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. The Panthers had two errors in the field. Both teams tallied seven hits in the contest.
On the season, Acker led the team offense with a batting average of .423, followed by Delaney Johnson at .408 and Huppert at .397. Johnson had a team-high six home runs, while Acker had five and Huppert had four. Karli Gutting led the stats with 14 stolen bases, followed by Brooke Olson with 10 and Madi Peterson with nine.
