I’ll admit, this week I struggled a bit about what to write about. I usually write about the events that happen in my life, hoping they’ll be entertaining or even possibly show people they’re not alone in things they face. But when my column about my daughter’s birthday was shared to our Facebook page, a reader scolded me for making her feel bad (I’m not sure how) and for writing about things that belong in my diary.

Her comment made me feel terrible. I shared the story of my daughter’s birth because a lot of people in the county know her and know me, through the paper. I shared it in honor of her birthday, a big deal to a young girl (and her golden birthday to boot). I shared it because it’s a way for me to connect with readers. Sharing details about my life shows people that I’m a member of the community just like they are, not just a person who sits behind a keyboard writing the news. Her comments made me think twice about sharing personal stories with readers. Maybe they do annoy people, I don’t know.

But then I thought about all the good things I’ve heard from readers about the column. I’ve had many people stop me at the grocery store, out in the community, and tell me they enjoyed it. People have written to me and sent me cards when I’ve gone through a tough time (which is more appreciated than you know). I’ve made friends through this column, plus learned about other people’s stories, which is the best part.

So I’m sorry if I offended someone by writing about my daughter. She’ll need to get over it. I hope she can find peace and her own happiness instead of trying to make other people feel bad.

A wise boss once told me that you’ll always hear from the 1% of people who are unhappy with something, such as an article or a meal at a restaurant. It’s rare to hear from the 99% who are happy with it or indifferent.

Now time for some updates at the paper. We are in the process of looking for and hiring a new sports reporter. We have several interviews lined up with quality candidates this week and I’m excited. Reagan Hoverman will be a tough act to follow, but we’re confident we’ll find someone who loves sports and community journalism as much as Reagan does.

In the meantime, we are beyond grateful to have the help of intern Andrew Harrington this summer. Andrew has been with us since May 17 and his internship will end Aug. 10 so he can head back to Iowa for his senior year of college. We might hold him hostage. I’m kidding, but tempted. He’s been a great addition to our team.

We also continue to improve our new website each week. If digital is more your style, then please make sure to check out piercecountyjournal.news. You can subscribe to our e-edition if that is what you prefer. Yes, we have a paywall after a certain number of articles. Yes, that is frustrating to some people. But think of it this way: Do you go to a restaurant and expect to eat for free? Do you get an oil change and pay nothing for it? Do you go to a salon for a haircut and demand to pay nothing? A newspaper is a business and the people who work here need to earn a living and have families to feed too. We are grateful to all our subscribers and advertisers who support our local business.
