To the editor,
Congressman Derrick Van Orden (R-WI-3) wants you to think he is a patriot. He never misses an opportunity to remind you of his time in service in the military.
I don’t think Mr. Van Orden is a patriot.
A patriot respects the institutions created by the Founders, including the courts, which uphold a Trial by Jury for all Crimes (Article 3 of the Constitution.) A patriot does not call a judge a “Scumbag” (Twitter/X, 5/30/24) when he doesn’t agree with a jury’s decision.
Judge Merchan is a highly respected justice of the New York Supreme Court. He has shown patience and even magnanimity toward a defendant (the ex-president) who respects no institutions and knows no social boundaries.
Unlike Judge Merchan, much of America is out of patience with the antics of the ex-president and his followers. We are tired of rhetoric from Republicans that is designed to tear down our institutions and tear apart our citizenry. For me, I am tired of seeing photos of Derrick Van Orden surrounded by smiling police officers when the same man crossed police lines on Jan. 6 to take selfies on the Capitol steps. If this is patriotism, we're in trouble.
