ELLSWORTH – Ellsworth Middle School had 16 sixth graders compete at the Math Masters competition March 3 at St. Croix Central Middle School with great success.
According to co-coaches Liz Hauser and Drew Pechacek, the competition consisted of a series of math tests.
“The students took some individually and worked in groups for others,” Hauser said. “Some of the tests were fact drills and others were word problems.”
One EMS team came in second place out of 15 teams. That team included students August Benoy, Joey Knothe, Luke Lundstrom, Konrad Theis and Mackenzie Hince.
An EMS team also took fifth place, which was comprised of students Natalie Kirchner, Ben Boyle, Kypton Meier, Brielle O’Neil and Melanie Seeger.
The third Ellsworth team came in eighth place overall. This team consisted of Cecelia Kleeves, Emmitt Starbuck, Ben Helseth, Cora Peterson and Riley Borst.
Two students placed in the Top 20 for the fact drill part of the competition: Ben Helseth (15th) and Mackenzie Hince (19th).
“These students studied and worked very hard to prepare for this competition every week during their Panther Time,” Hauser said. “We are proud of the wonderful job they did representing Ellsworth at the Math Masters competition!”
