Prescott loses low-scoring affair against Somerset

By Reagan Hoverman

Three local teams were in action on Friday, Sept.

9, in week four of the 2022 high school football season.

Elmwood/Plum City and Ellsworth continued to dominate conference foes while Prescott’s prolific offense struggled against a sturdy Somerset defense.

The Wolves of Elmwood/ Plum City continued to demonstrate offensive excellence in the 44-6 week four blowout of the Clear Laker Warriors. Senior utility back Trevor Asher continues to have one of the most prolific offensive seasons in Elm wood/Plum City history.

On Friday night, Asher tallied 297 rushing yards and three touchdowns on only 21 carries. Elmwood/Plum City totaled 426 yards of offense compared to Clear Lake’s 173. The Wolves scored 36 unanswered points through the first three quarters of the game.

Clear Lake finally got on the board with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to make it 36-6 in favor of the Wolves. Elmwood/Plum City added an insurance touchdown with two minutes left in regulation to solidify the 44-6 victory.

Elmwood/Plum City improves to 3-1 overall for the season, which includes a 2-0 record in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference standings. The Wolves remain in a tie for first place with Spring Valley and Turtle Lake.

Up next for the Wolves is a game on Friday, Sept. 16, on the road against Cadott.

That game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.

Ellsworth now 2-0 in MBC, 24-12 win over Baldwin- Woodville The Ellsworth Panthers improved to 3-1 for the season and 2-0 in Middle Border Conference action with a 24-12 win against Baldwin- Woodville at home on Friday, Sept. 9.

After a slow start on the road against the Amery Warriors in week three, the Panthers refused to do the same in week four against Baldwin- Woodville. Ellsworth got on the board with seven minutes remaining in the first quarter when senior running back Bo Hines broke loose on a 40-yard touchdown run.

A successful two-point conversion made it 8-0 for Ellsworth.

Baldwin-Woodville responded with a touchdown drive of its own, which culminated in a 30-yard touchdown pass less than a minute later. However, it was Ellsworth that scored the next 16 points in the second quarter to take a 24-6 lead going into halftime.

Although Ellsworth’s offense struggled in the second half, the defense picked up the slack and allowed only six Baldwin-Woodville points en route to the 24-12 victory. The Panthers join Rice Lake as the only team in the Middle Border still undefeated in conference play (2-0).

Up next for the Panthers is a game on the road against Somerset on Friday, Sept. 16.

That game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.

Prescott’s offense struggles against Somerset in 16-8 loss The Prescott Cardinals’ offense looked like it was on track to be one of the most potent in the Middle Border Conference this season after a 43-point performance against Osceola in week three.

That all changed in the 16-8 week four loss at home against the Somerset Spartans. Prescott’s dynamic offense was held scoreless in the first three quarters of action. Somerset scored the lone touchdown of the first half on a 77-yard pitch and catch with four minutes remaining in the second quarter.

A successful two-point conversion gave the Spartans an 8-0 lead that they held until Prescott sophomore running back Barrett Temmers knotted up the game 8-8 with a one-yard touchdown run with three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Somerset strung together multiple explosive plays before capping off the game-winning drive with a seven-yard touchdown run with less than three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Prescott failed to score on the ensuing drive, which gave Somerset the 16-8 victory.

Turnovers and a bottled- up rushing attack hampered Prescott’s previously dynamic offense. Sophomore quarterback Teddy Bernick finished the game with 192 passing yards on 21-33 with two interceptions.

The Cardinals tallied only 53 rushing yards on 31 total carries spread between five different players. With the loss, Prescott drops to 2-2 for the season and 1-1 in Middle Border Conference games. Prescott now joins a four-way tie for third place in the conference with Baldwin- Woodville, Somerset and Saint Croix Central.

Up next for Prescott is a road game against Saint Croix Central on Friday, Sept. 16. That contest is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
