No ‘blues’ in Plum City after two league wins at home

PLUM CITY — The Plum City Blues fans showed out and so did the team for a pair of home wins over the Ellsworth Hubbers 4-0 Saturday and the Prescott Pirates 9-4 Sunday.

Sunday’s game got off to a peculiar start, with the Blues posting nine runs in the first two innings alone. The runs came through a combination of a mountain of hits in addition to some “uncharacteristic” errors from the Prescott defense.

“They gave us a few, they had a few uncharacteristic errors,” Player/Manager Tony Garner said. “You usually don’t see the Prescott squad do that, and then we kind of had timely hitting.”

While the hitting success began to trail off after the second, the offense had done its job, and it was time for starting pitcher Lance Johnson to hold his end of the bargain. Johnson got the job done, pitching a complete game, allowing four runs. The performance came a day after Garner dealt a complete game shutout. Garner said there are pros and cons to complete games, as it usually means a strong performance from the pitcher, but does not provide an opportunity for other arms to stay warm.

“On the other side it doesn’t get our young guys in,” Garner said. “But there’s plenty of games for those guys to get in too.”

Crooked numbers were Plum City’s friend over the weekend, as the Blues scored all four of their runs against the Hubbers in a single inning and scored all nine in the first two innings against the Pirates.

“It makes a big difference,” Garner said. “It gives our pitchers confidence, the hitters relax more, especially on defense as well.”

On June 9, the Pirates took down the Blues in Prescott 6-3, marking a split for the two teams during league play.

Prescott made an effort to crawl back into the game, including a two-run home run from Evan Bayer in the fifth inning, but Plum City proved to be too much to handle in Sunday’s game.

Both teams now take a lengthy break, with Plum City’s next game on July 10 against Ellsworth and Prescott heads to River Falls to take on the Fish on July 13.

For Prescott, Player/Manager Billy Brookshaw said the team did not play up to their standard, but that they just need to wipe the slate clean and move on.

“It really hasn’t been an issue for us,” Brookshaw said. “This is obviously out of our kind of normalcy, but yeah, the defense [was] just horrible on that first few innings.”

The Pirates sit at 6-6 in league play heading into the break, and the time off will give the team some time to regroup.
