Free deer carcass disposal site again offered in RF

RIVER FALLS – The River Falls Sportsman’s Club, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and City of River Falls will again provide area deer hunters a safe, local solution for disposal of butchered animal remains during this year’s gun deer hunting season.

A lined roll-ou container provided by Murtha Sanitation will be sited near the City’s Wastewater Treatment Facility, at the south end of Apollo Road, during the week of Oct. 24 and will remain as long as possible.

The site is open to the public 24 hours a day.

Users are asked to only discard animal offal — no household junk, old TVs, mattresses or couches, please. The area is closely monitored.

The carcass disposal is intended to help minimize the spread of chronic wasting disease, a fatal, infectious nervous system disease found in the deer family.

Evidence shows CWD can be spread by improper disposal of carcasses.

The DNR began monitoring the state’s wild white-tailed deer population for CWD in 1999. The first positives were found in 2002. Pierce and St. Croix are among just a few Wisconsin counties in which the always-fatal disease has not yet been found.

CWD prions can remain in the environment for a long time, so other animals can contract CWD from the environment even after an infected deer or elk has died, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
