Letter to the editor: Say NO to Ridge Breeze CAFO expansion

Posted

To the editor,

On July 11 at 4 p.m. please join the WDNR virtual public hearing via Zoom to voice your objections to nearly quadrupling the number of cows at the Ridge Breeze Dairy CAFO in Pierce County’s Town of Salem (WPDES Permit No.WI-0062928-04-2).

Currently the Ridge Breeze Dairy CAFO in northeast Salem Township has a herd of about 1,720 milking or dry cows. The WDNR has conditionally approved Ridge Breeze Dairy CAFO’s plan to expand to 6,200 milking or dry cows and 300 heifers- all 6,500 animals would produce about 77.7 million gallons of liquid manure and wastewater every year, to be spread across western Wisconsin.

This proposed near 4X expansion of Ridge Breeze Dairy CAFO would have significant negative impacts on Pierce County water quality, air quality, land, roads, family farms, property values, and tourism. It would pollute our public waters in Rush River, Plum Creek, Nugget Lake, and Lake Pepin.

It would foul our air with manure stench. It would overload our land with nitrates and contaminants. It would damage our roads. IT WOULD PUT OUR FAMILY FARMS OUT OF BUSINESS! It would harm our rural way of life in the towns of Salem, Union, Rock Elm, and El Paso.

Say “NO” to the Ridge Breeze Dairy CAFO expansion.
