River Falls outgunned by Hudson, Raiders keep Little Brown Jug

HUDSON — It was a full house in Hudson as the Raiders took on the River Falls Wildcats, and Hudson found the offense needed to take home the Little Brown Jug for the second straight season with a 45-21 win Friday.

The Wildcats struck first, with their first drive facing little friction, coasting down the field with a pass to Josh Jenkins at the goal line ending the drive. The drive took the first quarter clock all the way under five minutes.

Hudson struck back on its first drive, and fumbles on back-to-back drives from the Wildcats allowed Hudson to score 21 unanswered for a 21-7 lead. River Falls would battle back with a long dime to Charlie Burke, but after that, it was just about all Hudson on the day.

“Can’t turn the ball over and gotta make sure that we do a better job getting some stops,” Head Coach Ryan Scherz said.

Hudson returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown and would win the third quarter 21-0.

The second half has caused problems for River Falls in recent weeks, as they have been outscored by multiple touchdowns in the last three second halves. Scherz said the team is focused and working hard, and they need to find a way to maintain momentum.

“When things start to go the wrong direction, we’ve had a difficult time flipping that momentum,” Scherz said. “Momentum’s a tough thing in sports, so demonstrating that resiliency in those difficult situations is something we continue to work on.”

Tino Massa went 16-for-22 passing, dealing 207 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Burke led the receiving with three catches for 111 yards and a score, and Joseph Tarasewicz led the rushing with 19 rushes for 91 yards. Charlie Loesch also racked up 78 yards and a score on 16 carries.

The Wildcats fell to 2-4 on the season and 1-3 in conference play after picking up a third straight loss. While the season is by no means over, the schedule does not get easier for the Wildcats, as their next matchup is with a Rice Lake team that has not done much losing in recent memory.

“We play a team that’s lost two games in the last two years, so we’re going to have to play really well,” Scherz said.

After that, River Falls finishes the season against Menomonie and Wausau West, both on the road. Scherz knows the formula for success, it is just about clicking on all cylinders when gameday comes around.

“We gotta find a way to put a total team game together,” Scherz said. “They’re working hard, they gotta continue to work hard and kind of fight through this adversity.”
