Many spring sports teams from around Pierce County have already wrapped up play, but there’s some exciting action still going on with a couple teams still having a shot at WIAA State Tournament berths. Here’s a look at what’s going on.

RF soccer meets common foe in opening game of sectional play

Some great work in the goal by freshman Neva Espanet, strong defense and the leg of senior Lillia Gray propelled the River Falls girls’ soccer team to a 1-0 win over Marshfield in WIAA Division 2 Regional play.

The second seeded Wildcats will play at top-seed New Richmond Thursday, June 6 at 7:30 p.m.

River Falls is just two wins from a trip to the WIAA State Tournament. In the lower half of the sectional bracket, top-seeded Onalaska takes on Holmen. The sectional final is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 8 at Oakleaf Stadium in Altoona.

After a scoreless first half, River Falls started putting a lot of pressure on the Marshfield defense. Gray then stole the ball from two Marshfield players at about midfield, dribbled down and launched a shot into the upper right corner of the net for the only score of the game about three minutes into the second half.

Espanet was credited with multiple acrobatic saves in the game.

With the win, River Falls is 11-3-7 on the season. The Wildcats took second to New Richmond in the Big Rivers Conference. The two teams tied 1-1 in both earlier face-to-face contests during conference play, with New Richmond coming from behind to tie both games.

River Falls advanced to the WIAA Regional final with a 12-0 win over Altoona on Tuesday, May 28.

River Falls baseball faces Hudson in sectional opener

The River Falls baseball team won its WIAA Division 1 Regional with a 7-0 win over Chippewa Falls on Thursday, May 30. WIAA Sectional play was scheduled for Tuesday, June 4 with the third-seeded Wildcats taking on second-seeded Hudson in round one. The winner of that game was scheduled to play the winner of the Stevens Point Area Senior High-Eau Claire North game later in the afternoon with a berth in the WIAA State Tournament on the line.

The Wildcats started regional play Tuesday where they narrowly defeated Marshfield 1-0 to advance to play Chippewa Falls.

River Falls is currently 21-4 overall on the season. The Wildcats took second place in the Big Rivers Conference, right behind this week’s foe, Hudson. The Wildcats have come out on the wrong end of two close games with Hudson during conference play.

River Falls tennis doubles team at state

The River Falls No. 1 tennis doubles team of Henry Whipkey and Sam Majerus competed at the WIAA State Tournament at Nielsen Stadium in Madison Friday.

The two won the Big Rivers Conference championship at No. 1 doubles this season.

They were the first River Falls doubles team to compete at state since 2000.

Whipkey and Majerus faced off across the net Friday afternoon against Will Murawski and Colin McGee of Kenosha Indian Trail, who defeated them 6-4, 6-7.

Two golfers at state

The River Falls Wildcats and Prescott Cardinals each advanced a golfer to the WIAA State Tournament at Blackwolf Run’s Meadow Valley Course in Kohler.

Connor O’Malley of River Falls advanced to state with a third place finish at the WIAA Division 1 Sectional Meet at Troy Burne Golf Course in Hudson. O’Malley shot a 75, five strokes off first place.

Prescott’s Tyler Reiter won the WIAA Division 2 Sectional at Turtleback in Rice Lake, shooting a one over par 72. The Cardinals just missed advancing as a team, as they took third, one stroke behind second-place Amery.

Rain delayed action at the state meet’s first round Monday for about two hours in the afternoon. O’Malley got his full 18 holes in before the delay, while Reiter had to wait out the downpour. As a result of the weather, Division 2 and 3 golfers only played nine holes on day one, with a full 18 planned on day two.

O’Malley was one of 11 golfers who shot 11 over par on the day. On the front nine, he shot five over at 41 with two pars, two birdies and three bogeys. He shot a six over 42 on the back nine, with four pars and four bogeys.

Playing the back nine, Reiter notched five pars and a bogey to shoot a 40, putting him just four over par for the day.

The final day of the tournament occurred after press time.
