Art Beat: Get inspired by Awakening

Awakening is a great spring theme for Art House’s current show.

Curators Leslie Batt-Lutz and Petra Guenthner have put together the Gallery’s most coordinated show combining Hannah Freeman’s botanical oil paintings, Kathy Reinart’s stoneware and Kara Wellman’s handmade sterling silver jewelry.

Last Saturday a designer and homeowner walked through the gallery talking about the way these organic round paintings could fit into a beautiful home. Inspired by walking through an Alaskan forest, Freeman’s paintings are delightful lenses to small organisms as well as larger pieces of our universe.

Inspired as a child by her artist/ high school teacher/ grandmother, Freeman brings the wealth of generations to our gallery. With an impressive Harvard MFA background, Freeman presents as both a professional artist and an encourager to her own students at UWRF. Her work ranges from 34-inch tondos to 2 ½ inch rounds. Names like “Co-exist, Evolved and Rebirth” on her paintings evoke “a holy awareness to the natural world.” Made on fast wood panels, Freeman’s paintings are clean, neat, and desirable to own. Price range is from $200 to $3,000.

Interspersed in the Awakenings Exhibit, you’ll find thrown, sculptured stoneware, as well as carved altered stoneware and porcelain by Reinarz. Kathy, an R.N. who works in high adrenaline hospital spaces has obviously found solace and redemption in clay. Her largest piece is a 2- inch vase priced at $900 and her smallest piece is a 4-inch cup at $35. To hear her talk about the stoneware and porcelain process gives insight into 12–16 hours for each part of the creation process she pours into her graceful art. This does not include the five to six wrecked pieces before she turns out her final product! Blue and Orange trumpet flower, Pink and Blue Peacock Bowl are names for two of her organic flowing vessels.

Wellman’s sterling silver jewelry is a draw to people who enjoy well-crafted rings, bracelets, earrings, and necklaces. This artist works with stones like opals, kunzite, obsidian, variscite agates and turquoise. The names of her pieces reflect their origins: Landscape Jasper Bracelet, Hawk Ear-rings, Butterfly and Obsidian Necklace, to name a few. Prices range is from $25 to $300.

Remarkable guitarist Kiernan Tollefson entertained at the Meet the Artists opening Thursday, May 9 with original music from his latest CD The Witching Hours.

The Awakenings show will be in the gallery from Thursday, May 2, through Saturday, June 15. Get inspired!
