Horsin’ Around Golf Scramble Benefit has special meaning for organizer

RIVER FALLS – Round up some friends and grab your clubs for Walk On Therapeutic Riding Programs “Horsin’ Around” Golf Scramble on Saturday, July 27 at the Pheasant Hills Golf Course in Hammond. This is the sixth annual golf event to raise funds for the riding program that provides individualized equine-assisted activities for children and adults with disabilities. Walk On is located in River Falls with riders that participate from several counties.

Walk On board member and special events volunteer Rick Allen has been instrumental in organizing the event since its inception in 2019.

“Our event has been gaining popularity for its laid-back, relaxed vibe. It features just a few raffles, games, and door prizes without the pressure of big auctions or a lengthy agenda,” Allen said. “The charm of this event attracts a unique group of supporters and sponsors who desire the simple pleasure of getting together to swing the clubs and raise funds for this amazing program.”

Allen can personally attest to the immense benefits riders receive from Walk On’s assisted equine activities. His daughter, Autumn, has been involved with the program since 2014.

“Being wheelchair-bound, she tends to experience muscle atrophy and contractions. Riding helps maintain her core strength and reduces leg contractions by stretching her muscles as she straddles the horse,” he said.

He added that emotionally and socially, the interactions she has with sidewalkers and the entire Walk On community are invaluable.

“It's more than just therapy; it's a chance for her to engage with the community, feel included, and even be the center of attention at times,” Allen said.

The fun begins with a noon shotgun start; prizes will be awarded for the longest drive, closest to the pin, longest putt and more, as well as drawings and prizes to be given away and proceeds will benefit the therapeutic riding program and its participants.

For 23 years, Walk On has provided individualized horseback riding through equine assisted activities and therapeutic riding instruction to children and adults with physical, developmental, social and emotional disabilities. Proceeds will also benefit the Horses for Heroes program which focuses on current members and veterans of the military, law enforcement, and emergency personnel.
