Eugene Herbert Oberg, age 85, of Ellsworth, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 14, 2024, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minn. Born to Russell and Margaret (Conroy) Oberg on Feb. 19, 1939, in Bay City, Wis., Gene lived a full and vibrant life. After high school, he briefly served in the United States Army National Guard.

On May 12, 1962, Gene married the love of his life, Marlys Deiss, at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in River Falls, Wis. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Mike and Lisa.

Gene started working early in life with his father at their junkyard which helped him develop his skills as a used car salesman. He had a knack for storytelling, sharing many tales from the good old days, and possessed a unique and engaging personality. Despite facing challenges like going blind in one eye, Gene approached life with a resilient spirit. He found it hard to say no to his family and always put their needs first.

Gene was a dependable and steadfast individual, always there when friends and family needed him. He found joy in various hobbies, including fishing, hunting, and playing poker. However, what he treasured most was the quality time he spent with his family and his beloved dog, Chloe. This close-knit bond and his genuine love for his family were the cornerstones of his life, making every moment spent together truly special.

Gene will be greatly missed by many, including his wife Marlys of Ellsworth; his children, Mike Oberg (Gloria) of Hager City, and Lisa (Doug) Toenjes of Ellsworth; his grandchildren, Abby (Tyler) Regnier of Ellsworth, Cole Toenjes, and Jared Toenjes; and his great-grandchildren, Vaya, Vinny, and the soon-to-be-born Baby Regnier. He is also survived by his brother, Russell (Bev) Oberg of St. Paul, as well as other family members and numerous friends. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Margaret Oberg.

A Private Family Mass and interment will be held in his honor.
