In honor of the recent May 5 holiday commemorating Mexico's victory in an 1862 battle in its war with France, the following anecdote has oft been told: The Titanic, unknown to most, was a ship carrying not only passengers but a load of cold, creamy sauce used in the preparation of sandwiches. It was headed to Mexico to deliver its cargo. When Mexican officials heard of the tragedy involving the ship, they decided to create their own special day to recognize the event. They named it Cinco de Mayo. There you have it, just another of the many useful, interesting tidbits of knowledge readers learn from reading this column. You are indeed blessed, but you knew that.

Knowledge gained from this version of The Skinny on Falcon Sports involves two RFHS Wildcats who have decided to play football for the Falcons: Jonah Severson and Jacob Range. Codey Olson and Landyn Zepczyk are two more who will be the subject of the next column.

Severson says that he decided to commit to River Falls, "because of the opportunity and the culture. I felt that I fit the culture that is built in the program and felt that a big change in playbook and coaching will help me become a better player and more importantly a better person."

Range says his decision was "because of the coaches. Having my dad coach there the last four or five years has allowed me to be around the team and coaches a lot and get to know them and that definitely played a big role in choosing UWRF. I also chose UWRF because it allows me to stay home. I have a lot of friends who will still be in high school so I'll be able to watch them play sports and be really close to my family."

Do they expect to get much playing time? Severson: "I'm gonna approach it with an attack mindset, work hard and let things play out the way they are meant to be. Many people I know, and coaches, have high expectations for me. I'm sure I can work hard enough to achieve them." Range: "I'd love to get playing time right away but I'm aware that most of the freshmen grey shirt so I'm also fully prepared for that to happen too!"

Both players were recruited by UWRF coaches. Range says he was recruited by a couple other WIAC schools and other division three schools "but UWRF was really my number one choice from the start." Severson thinks "the nice thing about River Falls and Coach Walker is that I was never pushed to go to events and keep the coaches updated on my recruiting process. Walker always wanted what was best for me and that led me to committing to UWRF because of how much he and the other staff seem to care."

Range plans to major in Accounting, Severson in Criminal Justice.

And now, for those who crave additional morsels of knowledge, I have another poser: What do you say to some scoundrel who is eating your cheese? Nacho cheese, bro!
