The Skinny on Falcon Sports: Soccer coming to UW-River Falls

If you are like me there are lots of things you don't know about soccer. For example, where would you go to buy a new soccer shirt? New Jersey, of course. And did you ever wonder why it seems to get warmer after a soccer game is over? That's because all the fans have left. Here we go, off on another learning experience while reading The Skinny on Falcon Sports, the only column guaranteed to leave you dumber than you were before you read it.

This edition introduces former University of St. Thomas assistant and new UWRF men's soccer coach Evan Sassano. So how did he first become aware of the job opening at UWRF?

"My awareness with the opening came shortly following the end of the fall season in 2023. I began speaking with UWRF's Associate Athletic Director, Steve Stocker, in the early stages of the interview process. From the initial interactions with Mr. Stocker and the athletic department, I was impressed by the level of professionalism, which made me feel genuinely welcome."

Why do you think UWRF is a good place to establish a new men's sport?

"First and foremost, the University of Wisconsin-River Falls has an exceptional athletic department. Crystal Lanning is one of the best athletic directors I have come across, and UWRF programs are consistently very competitive. The town of River Falls is intimate and very supportive of the university. We are excited to join the list of programs that have put River Falls on the map from an athletic standpoint and to grow soccer in our area. Additionally, this is a great school that is close to the Twin Cities and the MSP airport, but part of a very special River Falls and University of Wisconsin community."

About growing soccer in our area, do you see soccer programs increasing, particularly at the D3 level?

"Soccer has been expanding in the U.S. for about the last 30 years. From the Major League Soccer at the top, we have seen many new clubs appear and attract large fan bases. From the youth side, we are producing more and better players and coaches. This expansion has ultimately led to more college programs around the country. As a new NCAA D-III program, we are excited to be a part of this growth. River Falls and Wisconsin are getting into the U.S. soccer conversation, and I look forward to leading these opportunities for a higher level of soccer in this part of the state and country."

When asked which WIAC teams he sees currently excelling, he said Whitewater, Platteville and Eau Claire already have established programs and have proven their strength. The three new programs, including River Falls, Stevens Point and Stout, will not take long to equal the established programs.

How has recruiting gone so far?

"I am very happy and excited with those who are coming in this fall, and confident they will compete the moment they step foot on campus. We will be ready to open the season this Fall, 2024."

He said Bret Day, his assistant coach, is involved in club coaching in the Twin Cities, was an assistant at the University of St. Thomas, and will be involved in recruiting.

"He will bring a high level of professionalism to our program. I am excited to have him."

After a pair of exhibitions, the Falcons are slated to begin their first season on Friday, Aug. 30 against Crown College at 5 p.m., in Ramer soccer stadium. The 23-24 season features 18 matches, including five WIAC games and several regionally ranked opponents, including the reigning national champions, St. Olaf.

Coach Sassano would like those interested to know that on June 25-27 at David Smith Stadium and Ramer Field, a summer Junior Day Camp will be held for ages 5 and older. The cost is $50 for a half day. And on June 27 a Summer Elite ID Day Camp will be held at Ramer Field for ages 14 and older at $50. Registration and event details are online under UWRF Men's Soccer.

So there you have it. But, of course you had more before you read this column. That means you're like me. I never played soccer, which is the reason I have no goals. There's a lot less pressure on me that way.
