Volunteers double Cheese Curd Festival’s local impact

ELLSWORTH – Scheduled for Friday, June 21, and Saturday, June 22, the annual Cheese Curd Festival is known for a literal 3 tons of cheese curds, unique tasting events, class-act entertainment, artisan vendors, and big crowds. Behind the scenes though, you'll find a story of community spirit and giving back.

At the heart of the festival's success are the dedicated volunteers who generously donate their time and energy to make it all happen. It's a dedicated team of nonprofits and volunteers working together to ensure the festival goes off without a hitch. Through the Cheese Curd Festival's Nonprofit Volunteer Program, these volunteers not only lend a hand but also raise vital funds for local nonprofit groups.

For every hour volunteered at the festival, participants earn $10 for their chosen nonprofit. After a successful event, additional bonuses increase each group’s earnings. Since its inception in 2017, this program has directed nearly $110,000 to various area nonprofits, providing crucial support for their initiatives.

"The Cheese Curd Festival is more than just a fun-filled weekend; it's an essential fundraiser and economic driver for our small community," says Kim Beebe, Executive Director of the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce. "Through the volunteer program, we're not only ensuring the festival's success but also making a meaningful difference for the many groups who serve the people who live here."

For some local organizations, the festival is one of their largest annual fundraising initiatives. These groups funnel these funds back into the community, impacting various facets of Ellsworth's community life. For example, thanks to the dedication of the Friends of the Ellsworth Public Library and their volunteers, the festival funds special initiatives at the Ellsworth Public Library. The Ellsworth E3 Community Development Corporation benefits from volunteer efforts, contributing to initiatives like public art, the East End Mural Walk, and trails at Cairns Woods. Funding from the program supports the Hunger Prevention Council in providing for the Ellsworth Food Pantry, while local athletic programs use funds to support equipment purchases and specialized coaching. Additionally, participating churches engage in numerous acts of community service, further enriching the greater Ellsworth's community.

The range of volunteer opportunities caters to everyone, from answering questions at the Curd-esy Tent, serving up delicious cheese curds at the Cheese Curd Central Booth, and helping with tasting events. Even high school students can get involved, earning community service hours while supporting a local nonprofit.

With over 300 volunteer shifts available, volunteering at the Cheese Cud Festival is an easy way to give back to the community and support local nonprofit organizations.
