Walk On raises $16K for equine program

A steady downpour outdoors couldn’t dampen the spirit of festivity and generosity at Walk On Therapeutic Riding Center’s Fall Gala. The benefit was held Sept. 23 at Pheasant Hills Golf Course Event Center to raise support for the riding program that serves over 150 area children and adults with disabilities.

The evening kicked off with a social hour, silent auction and a steady flow of musical entertainment provided by local musician, Colleen Raye and her band members. A dinner, raffle and live auction ensued along with a special musical performance of Colleen Raye Sings Patsy Cline. “Katy’s Award” was presented to Tim Nelson for Walk On’s outstanding volunteer of the year (named after Ken’s late wife who started the program with him in 2001. She passed after a courageous battle with cancer).

“We are so grateful for our donors, sponsors and gala volunteers who made this tremendous evening a success,” said Giske.

This year’s Fall Gala raised over $16,000. Proceeds help support the ongoing operating costs of equine health care, feeding and facility maintenance. For over 22 years the River Falls-based program has provided equine-assisted services and therapeutic riding instruction to children and adults with physical, developmental, social and emotional disabilities.

Another benefactor of the evening is Walk On’s affiliate program, Horses for Heroes. It provides similar services to military veterans, first responders, law enforcement and emergency personnel.
